Taking a mini vacation

I'm taking the next few days off of work to work on the knitting projects I'm making for the Fun Day auction basket for my puppy club. I'm not getting very far because I keep changing my mind about patterns to knit. I think I've made up my mind though and will keep doing what I had originally planned to do.

I'm also distracted by the litters that are going to be given out on Fun Day. I still haven't received the letter or litter information, so I'm going over the Litter List. There are going to be a lot of crosses and Goldens and I'm getting a yellow Lab, so that leaves about 3 litters, one of which only has 1 female yellow Lab and there are only 3 puppies in that litter. Now, I could be getting a Lab cross, but probably not.
Of the 3 litters, only one has a letter assigned and that's a P litter. It's also Ardella's mother's third litter. Based on the letter patterns I'm seeing, the 3-puppy litter is probably an odd letter and it could be a Q (actually, based on California Fun Day, I think this is an M litter and I would be thrilled to get this puppy). The last litter that I could possibly be getting a puppy from falls alphabetically with a T. However, sometimes I've seen that the litter letter is the same as the mom's, so that could be a Z (it's her first litter) or an A.

I'm spending my time better than it sounds - you can think a lot when knitting.

Hummer Pics

We've had so many hummingbirds in our garden this year. It's been fun to sit around and take pictures of them with Kim's camera set on burst.

The crocosmia flowers have been a big draw for them.

Yard pictures

I love the back yard in late June. Everything is still green and the summer flowers are at their peak. Roses look beautiful right now. They don't call Portland The Rose City for nothing!

Favorite rose

I love the rich purple of this lavender:

The oranges of lilies,Mexican sunflowers and Blackeyed Susan Vine:

I'm amused by this campanula - it's taken over the side yard and any structure out there. It's the kudzu of our yard!

I love the crabapple-pink of this astilbe:

I love the blue of the hydrangea and can't wait until it turns a deeper blue in a few weeks:

Hydrangeas

The weather has been awful this spring and I really feared that the berries would get moldy. However, they haven't and it looks like we'll have a good crop:

Raspberries!

Blueberries!

I'm not the only one wanting berries - these two really want to help eat them.

Ardella and Kristin

Kristin is wearing her coat because she doesn't like it lately. She runs when she sees me pick it up. I think she associates it with the Halti. I may just give up on that thing!

I have to go rescue Aidan from the *!*! fireworks the neighbors are predictably setting off this time of year. He's barking frantically inside and out any time one goes off. I hate fireworks! Why can't people be quietly patriotic! Lyn is at the fireworks stand selling fireworks for our puppy club. Sigh! It's our main fund raiser. My luck! Lyn is filling in for both of us this year - I just couldn't take it.

Catch up

No work today - we ran out about 3 hours into my shift and we were all told to sign off. Just great... I may be writing more frequently in the future due to scenarios like this one.

I've been planning on what we will do if I'm laid off. Right now I'm obsessed with tiny houses. I think we'd have to build one at least 500 square feet, but scaling down sure is becoming appealing. This is kind of drastic, but aren't the houses cool!

Meanwhile, Ardella and Kristin continue to take naps together in the office when I'm working.

Sweet buddies

I have so many pictures like this one - I just love them. Kristin will be going back to campus on August 7 and I will be picking up a new puppy on the same day - it's GDB Oregon's fun day. I'm getting a female yellow Lab again, but I don't know the letter assigned to the litter yet. I'm not sure I get to know that since it's a Fun Day puppy. I go back and forth between being sad that Kristin is leaving and excitement that we're going to raise again. It's going to be an adjustment getting a young puppy in the house, but I can't wait, well except for the Kristin leaving part.

While I'm waiting, I'm working on an auction basket for the puppy club. I'll do show and tell when I'm done.

I am still fostering kittens. I took litter #2 back a few weeks ago, but Frida was still underweight for neutering so I kept her a little longer. She's still here and has turned into a wild little kitten who would like to eat 24 hours a day. She jumps from stool or table or chair to my legs and my children claim I've undergone some kind of scarification ceremony. I will be happy for Frida to find a new home, she's definitely ready to be adopted - I'm hoping she goes back early next week.

Frida

When Frida's littermates returned to be adopted, she let me know in many ways that she did NOT like being alone. I requested a short-term foster and received little Merlin. I have totally fallen in love with this kitten. He's one of the cuddliest kittens I've ever met and I would love to keep him. However, he's a little fragile right now. He hasn't been eating well at all since arriving here and has been losing a lot of weight. He's also a bit lethargic and I thin he's the same age as Frida (very drastic behavior difference). I'm having to feed him 6 times a day (including force feeding) and he's on Flagyl to kill any gut thing that might be affecting him. The vet has yet to find anything to treat so this is a catch-all precaution. I took him in yesterday and the vet thought for sure he had kitten distemper. She wanted me to prepare myself for the worst case scenario. Fortunately, he didn't have that. Today, Merlin appears perkier and he's eating willingly. I'm crossing fingers that he starts thriving and growing.

My favorite fuzz ball

Another request came out last week to foster an adult cat named Tulip. She had been sick, was no longer sick, but also wasn't eating, probably due to stress of being in the humane society for so long, which happens sometimes. She was very skinny, but she started eating the first night I got her. She's beginning to fill out some and is a very sweet and playful cat. She apparently had kittens and has adopted both Merlin and Frida. She's only 2 years old, and I think she'll be a great pet for someone.

The picture below is Merlin playing with Tulip. That's a big deal - he was PLAYING!

Georgie

Georgie
Georgie is our wonderful Lab mix dog. She is a very loud eater and is on an unrelenting quest for affection. She is, in a way, the Flora and Fauna Press Mascot.

Lay offs beginning

So, layoffs have started at work. The outpatient department was given notice today. Since we started the new radiology voice recognition program, I suspect I'll be given notice in a few weeks. Understandably, mood is pretty low in the HIS department right now. I guess I'd really better start taking those tiny houses seriously.

Merlin has turned around. He's playing, climbing and eating. I think he's going to be okay.

Greater Portland has been given a new CFR by GDB. I imagine Washington and the state of Texas will have their CFR announced soon, too, if they haven't already.

I'm going to try and have a good rest of the weekend. If anyone wants to cheer me up, go the SW Washington Humane Society and adopt a cat for 10 dollars, a kitten for 25 - all weekend. There are some great cats there right now!

I will attempt to have a better rest of the weekend; if I knew the letter of puppy to come, that would make me feel better!

Funny blog post about Vampire Lit

My sister posted this blog post on Facebook today. It was very funny and I want to share the post with others who don't "get" vampire books (I read Dracula, liked it, but it was the end for vampire novels for me). Loved the part where he interviews the 40-something-year-old mother.

Here's the link.

Names

Since I've been naming kittens this spring and summer, I bought a name book for inspiration. It was on sale at Barnes and Noble for about 5 dollars, so I couldn't pass it up. My daughter came over shortly after I bought the book, which I had on the coffee table, and I had to explain that this was NOT a hint, it was for animal names.

It's divided into sections of the usual male, female names, but also has Top 100 names, names for twins, place names, thing names and other facts about names.

I'm interested in female names right now and so have been perusing those. I find I like Greek and Arab names and think it's interesting that you can often find placement names (i.e., names that denote first, second) in all kinds of languages. This book has names from all over the globe. A, J, M and S seem to have the most abundant names, Q and X the least.

So, if anyone is looking for name inspiration, I recommend this book.

My litter is going back on Tuesday, well at least the males. Frida is losing weight and I'll need to keep her a few more weeks (twist my arm!). I'm not certain I'll get to keep another litter. It depends on a few things - news will be forthcoming.

Edit: Well that was fast! Just got word that I've been assigned a yellow female Lab puppy for Fun Day. Can't wait for August!
